But that's what you have to do if you want to buy more camera toys! Along the way though I was able to get out for one day to go do Race for the Cure, a race to raise support and awareness for breast cancer. It was particularly awesome because the AP contacted me and asked me to cover it for them! So I photographed for the day and had a blast. When it was all over, I sent in three images to state images (you send the images to them and they send them out to the wire). They liked one (or maybe two?) so much that they actually put them on the national wire! So that means any newspaper in the US that subscribes to the AP (which means pretty much every newspaper) could have used my photo if they wanted to! Pretty cool! First stop was the Danby Slides, an awesome section of stream where you could slide down on the bare rock. This was awesome! Providing relief from the heat, it served well. But I was also on a higher mission as well. I wanted to try and get a cool photo to submit to the AP. Not that it will matter as the AP guy really doesn't seem to like my photos at all, but what the hell. I had a shot set up in my mind and that shot wasn't at the slides. So we packed up and headed up into the Green Mountains on the Danby Mount Tabor road. We parked and actually followed a two mile section of the Appalachian Trail to reach the pond. It was awesome! The basis is that hay bales form insulation which is covered by a sort of stucco/plaster/mud covering. The basic idea is that a bunch of cows parade down Main street followed by all sorts of floats. It was awesome! I got such a kick out of both taking photos for the morning and getting paid to do it! The only downside was the rain which made life with two very nice digital cameras quite interesting (adding even more spice was one of them is a brand spanking new and very bankrupting Canon 5d). Hopefully I'll get more freelance assignments this summer, I've already had one last Thursday from the Associated Press, so now I can say I've strung for the AP (although technically I wasn't assigned, I suggested it to the editor and he said I could cover it- it was an opening for a Rembrandt Etching exhibit at our local museum). I knew Phyllis (the college photographer) was going to get all the land angles so I figured I'd try for something different and managed to scrape up a kayak. It actually turned out to be a bit of a wasted of time as I had a wide angle lens and it was only when I was on the water (or toxic waste, you take your pick!) that I thought of a hundred very inebriated seniors capsizing me. Last Thursday my family and I went to Boston to first go to the MFA and then to go to a Sox game. This was especially traumatic for my sister as she is a self proclaimed art "disliker" and a rabid Red Sox fan who will do grievous harm to you if you make the mistake of uttering an unkind syllable against her precious team (her brother has done this a few times and regretted it dearly). So once she had spread her grumptastic likeness all throughout the MFA we escaped into the sunlight, to another museum, to dinner, and then at long last to Fenway. Going to Fenway is an experience like none other. I love it not for the game of baseball itself but for the people watching it affords. People (especially after three or four trips to the beer vendor) are CRAZY! There are also new sights, sounds, and smells at every turn. If you have the chance to go to Fenway (even if you aren't a fan of the Sox) go! It was simply for the experience it offered. A little oversized silverware at dinner (the salad monster strikes again), then some chess action in P-Gill. And the two awkward photos are because there was a public speaker (on the nature of evil) who was to paranoid to have any photo of him taken. So after a little haggling with the snippy professor who brought him here, I was able to get a photo of people talking. Great, that really gives a wonderful photo for the paper to print. I even tried asking about taking a photo of his back. No cigar, snippy man still was snippy. Relieved to get out in the fresh air away from the hypocrisy of a theoretically "public" talk, I got some photos of frisbee. I was overall more pleased with the results than the Nordic. I'm not sure whether this was because I'm no stranger to Alpine races, or simply the more planned out shots that Alpine demands. The entertainment was Burlington Taiko, but forget entertainment, it was enthraling! On saturday I watched the Brandeis vs. NYU game (Brandeis won, 2-1) and then Brooke and I went into boston to see the new Warren Miller film in Boston (very commercial, but it's forgiven with the jaw dropping cinematography that captures the beauty of skiing where the snow is always perfect and the skies are always blue). We finished up the night with some Thai food and a walk around the MIT campus. On Sunday we went into Cambridge to see Clem at Harvard. We all went to the wonderful Degas exhibition at the Sackler gallery. Before our departure Brooke and I took a walk and gawk of the campus behind Clem. Wow! The only thing I could compare the campus to was Hogwarts from Harry Potter (thanks Clem!). It felt like there was magic all about. The leaves were too spectacular to miss, so I spent a bit of my day photographing them. First of a frisbee game and then of leaf pile jumping event in the afternoon. Both were great fun, providing both a test of camera technical talent and of tree climbing skills (I'll try and get a picture of me up there from someone in the future!). Almost all of these images were shot in RAW format, so there's quite a bit of doctoring. The sun was out and a few friends and I took off for Tumbledown, about an two hour's drive north of Bates. Washington (highest peek east of the Mississippi, woo hoo!). The group of pictures I'd recommend seeing is this group (72 photos). It doesn't have repeats and gives the full picture. I usually run about 1 good picture per 3 shots, so there are 97 images (this has quite a few repeats) in the large gallery. If you don't want to go through all of them, just head over to the 16 image gallery and take in the Mt. Washington lite version. Walking out into the stadium from one of the entrance tunnels is an incredible first time experience. The light and sound is simply an overload of all senses! And not only that, this was Fenway!
